This evening I participated in a panel at the Social Entrepreneurship Forum at SUNY Purchase. My fellow panelists were Rob Katz from the Acumen Fund and NextBillion.net and Rex McKenzie assistant professor of Economics at Purchase and author of the PEB blog, and moderated by Leah Massar.

A good panel, and excellent audience participation.

....

One question that came up: Is now a good time to start a social entreprise? To that, I would answer with a link to this post by Y Combinator founder Paul Graham Why to Start a Startup in a Bad Economy. He was writing about start-ups, but much applies to social enterprise as well.

AntSummer may be over (at least here in the US), but it's never to early to start thinking about pest management for when the bugs come back next year, or for those of you who live in areas with mild climates. Some insects are not only annoying, but can cause damage to your home and to your health.

The best option for dealing with unwanted insects is obviously with a green <a ... [visit site to read more]

I found this video yesterday, and had to share it. As stated below, it’s a very catchy song and it has a pretty nice message. Also, I know somebody who loves Garrison Keillor. Even several years after seeing my first live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in New York, I still get one song in particular stuck in my head from time to time.

Watch the video here.

From TreeHugger

If there’s one thing that clean diesel has been lacking, it’s a catchy jingle. When you idly think of McDonald’s, what comes to mind? “Bah da da da da, I’m lovin’ it,” perhaps? Now, what about clean diesel? Well, if you happen to live in the UK, it might be “Hate Something, Change Something.” The jingle is sung by renowned author and radio personality Garrison Keillor over a charming, clever animation of dirty diesel engines getting transformed into clean ones.

The whole thing is an ad by Honda for clean diesel, and you know what? The message sticks.

Good for you Honda in noticing that we need some change. Cleaner diesel is one step toward a solution. Keep pushing the limits further.

Plastic Bag… Bag
icon1 Mike | icon2 Member Posts | icon4 10 31st, 2008| icon3Comments »

If you haven’t picked up one, or a few reusable shopping bags yet, that probably means you’ve got a large collection of plastic bags piling up waiting to be reused to pick up pet waste, or for some other task. Well, I found this great way to reuse your plastic bags over at Go Green

If you know how to crochet, or would be interested in learning, plasticbagbag.com has instructions and patterns for making unique reusable items out of plastic grocery bags.

I don’t know if I’d personably be skilled enough to even try a project like this, but if I ever stumbled across a large collection of plastic bags that needed saving from a landfill, it may be worth the time to try and learn. In the meantime I strongly encourage everyone to pick a few reusable bags from the EasyGreensy Store, and start cutting down on all those wasted bags.

If you do decide to try making one of these bags please share your results with us below. If you’d like to share photos of your finished project with other readers, please feel free to contact me via the contact page.

wheat

Gluten is a chewy protein found in wheat, rye, and barley.

It's the glue that sticks bread together and helps it to rise.

And one out of a hundred Americans suffer from anemia, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, gas and bloating, muscle cramps, or a skin rash by eating foods containing gluten.

The disease is called Celiac Sprue, and is one of the most under-diagnosed illnesses. It has been estimated that only 3% of the people suffering from it actually know about it. Even a small amount of gluten can be detrimental to them. Confusing the issue is the fact that some people are allergic to wheat, but can tolerate gluten.

Celiac is a genetic disorder, not an allergy. It's an auto immune disorder causing damage to the small intestine, destroying the villi, which leads to malnutrition.

Simple Ways Wednesdays - Episode 12
icon1 A. Caleb Hartley | icon2 Member Posts | icon4 10 30th, 2008| icon3Comments »

Many apologies for my long absence from blogging - nearly a month!  Raconteur Theatre, the theatre company that my wife and I (and several friends) started has officially dropped from eight board members to only four, and with the current show (Ibsen’s Ghosts) having just ended, we are now moving into rehearsals and planning for our December show: Columbus, Ohio playwright Sarah Tobin’s Mom & Pop!

This post is coming a little late on Wednesday, (and is two or three weeks late since my last “Simple Ways Wednesdays” post).  I think you’ll be excited for a few weeks, though, because Simple Ways Wednesdays is starting a series-within-a-series…  for the next several weeks, Simple Ways Wednesdays will be helping you with meaningful holiday gift planning:

Make your own Holiday Gifts with Natural Ingredients!

The first recipe you get is: Avacado/Almond Neck Moisturizer

Ingredients:
1 Teaspoon Dried Chamomile (click link to buy it online - use the search field at the top right of the screen)
1 1/8 cup water
3 Tablespoons Avocado Oil (click link to buy it online - use the search field at the top right of the screen)
3 Tablespoons Almond Oil (click link to buy it online - use the search field at the top right of the screen)
2 Teaspoons Jojoba Oil (click link to buy it online - use the search field at the top right of the screen)
1 ounce beeswax beads (click link to buy it online - use the search field at the top right of the screen)
2 teaspoons glycerin
20 drops Organic Lemon Essential Oil (click link to buy it online)
2 large ceramic cups
Strainer
Double-boiler
Sterilized 6-oz glass or ceramic jar with tight-fitting lid

Directions:
1: Boil the water
2: Place the chamomile in a large, ceramic cup
3: Pour the water into the cup with the chamomile and let steep for 15 minutes
4: Strain the liquid into another cup
5: In the top of the double boiler (set over simmering water), warm the jojoba, avocado, and almond oils
6: Add the beeswax beads and stir until melted
7: Remove from heat, and stir in 2 tablespoons of the chamomile liquid drop by drop until the mixture thickens and cools
8: Mix in the glycerin and lemon essential oil thoroughly
9: Spoon the mixture into the sterilized glass or ceramic jar
10: Store in a cool, dark place

This recipe will make, for only a few dollars, what you might pay $15-$25 (or more!) at a beauty shop.  Additionally, you know exactly what is going into a recipe that you are making yourself.  Can’t beat that!

This mixture should be massaged into the neck from the neckline all the way to the chin.  The oils will keep skin soft and supple.

Get cracking on this recipe… only a handful of weeks until it is gift-giving time!

Namaste,
A. Caleb Hartley

View Obama video on environment here.

Thanks to a tweet by PassionateGreen, I just found out about the Environmentalists for Obama group. Although I don’t agree 100% with his ideas about solving issues like global warming (mainly the thought the coal will ever be clean), I do strongly believe he is the best choice available to help move our country toward a greener future.

From Environmentalists for Obama:

I just signed up as an Environmentalist for Obama. Now, more than ever, we need a strong environmental leader like Barack Obama as President. His well-known dedication to the environment has been proven during his years in state government and the U.S. Senate. I think he has the ability to bring people together to resolve the tough environmental and energy challenges facing us today.

I hope you will check out his website and join me by signing up as an Environmentalist for Obama. Once you have done this, you will be given the opportunity to attend or host special environmental events and activities in your area to help support his campaign.

One Project Closer in conjunction with The Home Depot is currently holding a contest to win a ceiling fan (or two) in the form of a $175 gift card. Now that’s a great deal! If you’d like to enter, just head on over to the contest page. Hurry though, there are only a few days left to get in!

Ceiling Fans are great way to get the air in your home moving, and they help reduce your air conditioning costs.

So what are you waiting for? Did you enter yet?

Greening your Bathroom

As we continue to work on decorating our home I thought I would point out some tips on how to make the best possible decisions on how to reduce your environmental impact. Obviously if you are doing a total reno or building from scratch you have the ability to make more green decisions. We are not in this situation. We are just decorating. But I know what I would do differently if we were starting with a blank slate.

In your bathroom there are lots of ways to reduce the amount of water and energy you are consuming. Some tips will be tools you have to puchase, others are require a behaviour change.

Shower
How long do you typically shower for each day? The average shower head uses 5 gallons of water per minute (low flow is under 2.5). If you shower for 10 minutes a day then you would be consuming 50 gallons of water just from the shower.

What can you do to reduce your environmental impact from your shower?
* Keep your shower time to 5 minutes.
* Don't shave with the water running in the shower
* Invest in a low flow shower head
* Lower the temperature on your hot water heater
* Use an environmentally friendly cleaner
* Look for tiles that are made locally or purchase from a reuse store
* Use biodegradable shampoo and body wash

Toilet
When Joey and I first started dating I was in shock at his water usage. He would throw a tissue in the toilet and then flush it. Why Joey why??? The average toilet uses 5 gallons of water (low flow is under 2.0).

What can you do to reduce your environmetal impact from your toilet?
* Don't flush it just to flush it
* You could follow the If it's yellow let it mellow philosophy (but this one is over my line)
* Invest in a low flow toilet
* Don't use those toilet pucks that put chemicals into the toilet and down the drain with each flush

Sinks
What can you do to reduce your environmental impact from your sinks?
* Use biodegradable soaps
* Turn the water off when you are not using it

Decor
Lots can be done with the decor to make your bathroom more environmentally friendly.
* Purchase organic cotton towels
* Put window treatments on the windows and use them to keep your energy costs down
* Ensure you have a fan and that you change/clean the filter on a regular basis
* Put the fan on a timer so it goes off 60 minutes after you finish showering
* Use CF lighbulbs for all your lighting
* Paint the room with VOC free paint
* Look at antinques for furniture and storage solutions
